Mussolini (left) and Hitler sent their armies ...Image via WikipediaThere have been many sad and deadly assassinations over the years from the assassination of Kennedy to King but there have also been attempts on lives that have failed and more often than not for the better. Let’s take a look at some of the failed assassinations that shook the world.

We go back to 1981 with this one and this adds to the massive number of attempts and successes of the various Presidents of the United States lives. Fortunately in this case Reagan survived and the most likely cause of this is because the criminal was completely insane. An interesting fact is that Reagan is actually the first ever president to survive being shot in an assassination attempt.

John Hinckley, the man behind the attack fired 6 shots in three seconds in the general direction of Reagan but all six shots missed. The reason the president was hit was because one of the bullets hit the armoured limo and went into the Presidents arm stopping just before the heart and puncturing the lung.  The irony of it is that if the limo hadn’t have been armoured the president would have walked away unharmed!

A character that isn’t liked but surprisingly has a lot of respect from historians for some of his battle tactics Hitler actually survived around 42 assassination attempts in his lifetime, 17 of these were on large scale destruction. The most famous of these was operation Valkyrie in which army chiefs all got together to try and kill Hitler and overthrow the Nazis. Don’t forget a lot of Germans were completely against the killing of the Jews and wanted to put a stop to Hitler.

George Bush

Although it is certainly safe to say that many people would not have mourned the death of this President (something I think is a bit harsh) but in 2001 someone discharged shots towards the direction of the White House. The shots were fired at an angle so didn’t really get close to the White House but he was arrested as he was in fact aiming to kill the president. As well as this in 2005 a grenade was thrown right next to the President with the pin taken out. Fortunately the grenade had been wrapped rightly in a red handkerchief which actually stopped the grenade from even going off!

So although these are only three failed assassinations there are many more out that include Pope John Paul 2, Benazir Bhutto and Chen Shui-bian.
