Steel crushed and baled for recycling in a rec...Image via WikipediaThere are all shapes and sizes of electronics, and these days new models are coming out almost constantly, making your old version obsolete. From televisions to computers and appliances to cell phones, electronics make up a huge portion of our life.

The problem at some point however, becomes what to do with your old electronic devices. After spending so much money to purchase them, it hurts to just throw them out, plus it’s wasteful, so here are a few options to consider when it comes to what to do with your old electronic items.

A Showpiece

Certain electronics, depending upon their style or age, could make for a great showpiece whether or not they are still useful. Vintage electronics (and it doesn’t seem to take long to become vintage in the realm of electronics) could be worth holding onto not only for the memories they might provide but also because they could be used to create a retro style in a home, office or similar space. Who knows, one day the item could become rarer still and you might be able to sell it for some real money!

Resale

Your old or unwanted electronics might not be worth much to you, and in some cases might not be worth much to other people either, however; it might be worth taking a stab at reselling them. You never know who might be looking for a certain electronic item to replace a piece they happened to break or lose. By way of a garage sale, resale shop, or online resale option, you could end up making a few bucks off your unwanted electronic items and give them a new life in the process.

Phone a Friend

You may not have to go the resale route if you have a friend or family member who could use a particular electronic item or items you no longer desire. It could only take a quick phone call, email, or test message on one of your newer electronic devices to determine if you can pass your old piece along to someone you know and who might be in need.

Donation

If you don’t have a ready way to get rid of your electronic devices and make a little cash or you don’t have a friend to give them to, then it might be worth donating them to a charitable organization. Not only does this option provide you with a chance to recycle the items and help someone in the process, it might also get you’re a tax deduction in the process.

Utility Pickup

Your utility provider may be willing to pick up old appliances, air conditioners, or similar items to dispose of them for free. This can take the load and responsibility off of your shoulders. They could even be willing to pay you a little something for the opportunity to do so. Some utility providers include mailers in your bill, notifying you of such options, or you could visit their website to look for similar offers.

Put it out

In certain neighborhoods there are scrap collectors that make the rounds the night before your trash pickup. It might be worth putting your item or items out there to see if they would be interested in taking them either for themselves or for the scrap heap where they could be recycled.
